Robert McFarland
My introduction to painting came in 1987 when my wife enrolled me in a beginning watercolor class for a birthday gift. This led me to painting seriously on my own studying the work of Philip Jamison, Andrew Wyeth and Thomas William Jones.
I am passionate about watercolor. The limitations it presents gives rise to its strengths if handled correctly. Its transparency breathes air and light into a painting. Its unpredictability can bring spirit. Its unforgiving nature brings a true emotional response.
My recent exhibits include Buffalo Bill Show, Buffalo Bill Center of the West; CFD Western Art Show, Old West Museum; Small Works Great Wonders National Cowboy Heritage Museum; Settlers West American Miniatures; Coors Western Art Show; Zions Bank Show Art Show and Sears Museum Dixie Invitational.
Publications I have been included in are Illuminations Column "Western Art and Architecture" (Feb/Mar 2022), Feature Article, "Art of the West" (July/Aug 2021), Back Cover 35th Anniversary Edition "Gray's Sporting Journal" (May/June 2010), Special Series: Watercolor and Pastel " Southwest Art" (June 2006), Collectors Choice "Southwest Art" (September 2005) and Feature Article "Watercolor Magic" (April 2005).
