Stefan Savides
Stefan’s talents could be measured by his accomplishments in the art world, which are many and have spanned a lifetime, however what is more important is the essence of his life. From a young adult he has built a thriving career in art “outside the box”. It is the blessed few who are born into this world with a passion that was not to be interrupted by the complexity of the modern day we live in. He has embraced a total connection to the beauty and teachings of nature, which has guided his choices at each crossroad he’s encountered. The common thread, which binds his life, are birds and his work embodies the fruit of that journey.
Savides, born 1950, has been obsessed with birds as a young child. At twelve, he had mounted his first bird. By age sixteen, Stefan was teaching adults taxidermy organized by the city recreation department in his hometown of Vacaville, California. At age 18 he moved to the Klamath Basin on the California/Oregon border where he set up a taxidermy shop. Stefan went on to become a major figure in the world of avian taxidermy internationally, judging taxidermy shows and conducting seminars around the world.
Besides his love of birds, art has shared his passion. Throughout his life he has painted, carved and reproduced avian subjects in one form or another, however he realized twenty-five years ago, if one wants to leave his mark on the world of wildlife art, taxidermy is not it. Stepping in to the world of bronze sculpture after having spent fifty years studying anatomy and composition created a natural transition for him.
He has produced nearly twenty public installations, and is represented by fine art galleries across the country as well as being a regular participant in museum shows around the country. Stefan is the “real deal” when it comes to avian sculpture!
